5 Substitute for White Sugar

1) Stevia

Stevia is an extract or powder that comes from a leaf of a plant native to South America. The benefit of using stevia is that it is somewhat calorie free and is about 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, so you can use much less. It also doesn’t impact blood sugar like table sugar, and one study showed it may even help lower blood pressure. However, if you were to use Stevia, do so in moderation.

2) Brown Sugar

Brown sugar is made from sugar combined with a small amount of molasses.  Due to its molasses content, brown sugar contains certain minerals, such as calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium. The only negative of brown sugar is that its not actually any healthier than ordinary white sugar, the benefits are only in small amounts and therefore, does not actually bring any strong health benefits. As such, it is important to use brown sugar in moderation.

3) Honey

Honey are sweet nectar made by bees (it is important to get raw and unprocessed honey). The benefit of unprocessed raw honey is that it contains lots of beneficial nutrients like vitamins and iron. It can also act as an immune-system booster thanks to the antibacterial compounds that help fight infection in the body.
Although it has a lot of beneficial effects it unfortunately can cause negative effects this is due to the calories and the glycaemic index as it is higher than some of the other substitutes. As such, it is important that you use it in very small amounts.

4) Dates

Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree. The benefit of dates is that they’re full of fibre, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium, dates are also low on the glycaemic index, this means that they spike your blood sugar less than refined sugars. Although it has a lot of benefits Dates are quite high in carbohydrates.

5) Coconut Sugar

Coconut sugar are made from sap from the cut flower buds of the coconut palm tree. The benefits of using this is that it’s low on the glycaemic index and it is also low in fructose. The flavour is similar to cane sugar. As such it works well for baking, where some other sugar substitutes do not. Although it has a lot of benefits it unfortunately, has about the same number of calories as table sugar, and it can also be expensive.
If you decide to buy this sugar, you can use it to make slightly healthier pastries.
